Installing a Level 2 EV charger at home: what to expect

A Level 2 charger turns an overnight stop in the garage into a full battery. Here's what the installation involves, so there are no surprises.

Level 1 vs. Level 2

Level 1 uses a regular 120V outlet and adds roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour. Level 2 runs on 240V and typically adds 20–40 miles per hour, enough to fully charge most EVs overnight.

Can your panel handle it?

Most Level 2 chargers need a dedicated 40–60A circuit. Many 200A panels have room; many 100A panels don't. Load-managing chargers can sometimes avoid an upgrade entirely.
